Whitby Sunset
Last minute spring evening dash to Whitby for Sunset.
Location:
Whitby is a small town along the North York Moors coast. Made famous by Bram Stokers Dracula and the explorer Captain Cook. The main location within Whitby that I spent the evening at was up on the cliff near the Abbey looking down towards the pier.

- Nikon D750
- Nikon 16 x 35mm wide angle lens
- Tamron 70 x 200mm Zoom
- Manfrotto tripod and ball head
- Lee Circular Polariser /Lee Little Stopper (6 Stop)
The Shot:
Once I reached Whitby I headed towards St Marys Church at the top of the 199 steps. This location has a great view over Whitby and the pier. The sky at this point was looking very promising, it had been bright, clear and sunny all day but luckily a few clouds had appeared. The sun was due to set above the town but way too bright to shoot towards it now. I looked around the graveyard and over towards the pier, at this point the bright sunset was casting a lovely orange glow onto the ancient sandstone of the pier. Being aware that the sun was almost dipping behind a bank of cloud I quickly set up and composed the shot. I used my Tamron 70-200mm lens to isolate pier from the surrounding coastline. After a quick focus and check of the composition, I added a Lee Circular Polariser to cut down the glare of the water. After one last check I locked focus to manual and added a Lee little stopper. This allowed me to reduce the light entering the lens by 6 stops allowing for a longer exposure. I am very pleased with the results below.
